The Story & Details

There are objects you acquire. And then there are objects that find their way to you.

This Unkuña — known in the Andean world as a Mestana — belongs to the second kind.

Handwoven by the women of the Upis community, nestled at the foot of Ausangate, one of the most sacred mountains in all of Peru, this ritual cloth carries within it something that cannot be manufactured or replicated: a living memory. For generations, these textiles have been used in Andean ceremonies to honor Pachamama — the Earth Mother — to hold sacred stones, to wrap offerings, and to create a consecrated space wherever they are laid.

What you see in this piece reflects that heritage exactly. The design speaks in the language of Andean duality — black and white, side by side, representing the complementary forces the Q'ero people call Tawa, the sacred four. Framing both fields, a hand-stitched rainbow border — each color deliberate, each stripe woven with intention. At the four corners, handmade tassels in contrasting black and white anchor the piece and mark its edges as intentional, not decorative.

The fiber is 100% natural alpaca wool, dyed exclusively with natural pigments. No synthetic dyes. No chemical treatment. The colors you see are the colors of the earth, the plant, and the mineral — extracted and fixed through ancestral knowledge that chemical shortcuts cannot approach.

Dimensions: approximately 50 × 48 cm. Each purchase includes a handwoven ribbon (approximately 90 cm) to fold and tie the Mestana into a traditional sacred pouch — complete, as it was always meant to be used.

Only 3 pieces are available. Each one is unique. Each one has passed through the hands of a woman whose craft is also her heritage and her livelihood.

Use it as an altar cloth for your spiritual practice, as a base for ceremony, as a surface to honor your sacred objects, or simply as one of the most meaningful things in your space. The Unkuña does not need a particular tradition to carry meaning — it carries its own.

Care: Hand wash gently in cold water with a mild shampoo or natural detergent. Lay flat to dry in the shade.
