The Story & Details

Before the Inca built Machu Picchu, before the roads crossed the continent, they mapped the world into four. Chinchaysuyo. Antisuyo. Kuntisuyo. Collasuyo. Four territories radiating from a sacred center — Cusco, the navel of the earth — together forming Tawantinsuyu: the world entire.

This Unkuña Mestana carries that map in every thread.

Four quadrants, each woven in a distinct natural alpaca tone — black, charcoal gray, pale ash, camel, deep brown — arranged differently in each piece, as the Suyos themselves were shaped by geography, by memory, by the land. No two models are identical. Each one is its own reading of the same ancient order.

The fiber is 100% natural alpaca wool, entirely undyed. These colors — earthy, quiet, and permanent — come from the animal itself, from the high-altitude herds of the Peruvian Andes where alpaca has been raised for millennia. No synthetic dyes were used. No chemical treatment was applied. What you see is what the fiber was born with. And in a world saturated with artificial color, that restraint carries a weight of its own.

Framing each piece on both sides: a hand-stitched border of vivid multicolor stripes — pink, orange, green, yellow, blue — a burst of Andean vitality that gives the earth tones their full depth by contrast. At each corner, handmade tassels in mixed natural and colored threads complete the textile's sacred geometry.

The Mestana — known in Quechua as Unkuña — is a ritual cloth with a living purpose. Used for generations by Q'ero and Andean communities, it serves as the inner cloth of ceremony: a surface to lay beneath sacred offerings, to hold chumpi khuyas, coca leaves, flowers, and healing stones during a Despacho ceremony or a moment of prayer to Pachamama. The Unkuña represents the inner world; the Mestana, the outer. Together they hold the sacred and the everyday in one cloth.

These three pieces come from the Upis community, at the foot of Ausangate — one of the great Apus, the sacred mountain spirits, of the Peruvian Andes. The women who made them learned their craft the way their mothers did, and their grandmothers before them. There is no factory version of this. There is no second print run.

Dimensions: approximately 40–42 cm × 40–42 cm (approx. 16 in × 16 in). Each purchase includes a handwoven ribbon (approximately 90 cm / 35 in) to fold and tie the Mestana into a traditional sacred pouch — a complete ritual object, ready to use.

Three models available. One unit per model. When yours is gone, it is gone.

Care: Hand wash gently in cold water with a mild shampoo or natural detergent. Lay flat to dry in the shade. Ships from France in eco-responsible packaging.
